We are all familiar with the term, but most of us don’t really pay too much attention to what the serving size of a food is – and when we do, who knows how much 6 ounces of chicken is?
Servings are usually listed in ounces or cups and then in grams – usually in parenthesis. It will also tell you how many servings are in the container. So if, for example, you are going to use a whole jar of tomato sauce, be conscious of the fact that there are more than likely more than one serving. In fact, there are probably more than two servings. You need to make sure that you multiply all the other nutrition facts accordingly.
Things with nutrition labels are easy. It lays it all out for you. But what about fruits and veggies? They are so good for you, but it’s almost impossible to know how many blueberries are in an ounce (at least for me – I was pleasantly surprised at how many blueberries are in one ounce!). So how do you figure it out? With a kitchen scale of course. We own two, but I have my favorite that I keep next to the sink and right by the dishes. This makes it easy for me to weigh my food and know exactly what I’m intaking. This allows me to input exact measurements in my diabetes manager app and know exactly how many carbs I’m consuming.
